NOTIONAL TOPOGRAPHY

Artist’s Statement

Weather, time and human intervention prey upon the materials of structures – be they stone, paint, wood or metal. I find this transformation haunting and primordial.

Clearly, these photographs can’t be deemed maps in a traditional sense. However, when we consider erosion as a metaphor for that way built structures fall apart, we begin to see a different kind of Kansas topography, a different kind of Kansas history.

Notional Topography was exhibited at the Invisible Hand Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas from September 30th - October 22nd, 2011. It was also exhibited at the Embrey Gallery at the Barstow School in Kansas City, Mo. from March 30 - May 1, 2012.
